Norsvin is a cooperative owned by Norwegian pig producers. Norsvin’s business areas are research, development, production and sales of swine genetics.

In 2014, Norsvin merged its international operations with the Dutch company Topigs and founded the company Topigs Norsvin, which today is the world’s second largest company in swine genetics. Through Topigs Norsvin, Norsvin’s genetics is distributed to the international market.

Norsvin is also a special interest organization, working to improve the pig producers’ professional and financial framework conditions.

In 2014, Norsvin merged its international operations with the Dutch company Topigs and founded the company Topigs Norsvin, which today is the world’s second largest company in swine genetics. Through Topigs Norsvin, Norsvin’s genetics is distributed to more than 50 countries. This means that there are more finishers with Norwegian genes outside Norway than within the country. 

  • Topigs Norsvin is present in 55 countries and has more than 700 employees world wide. 
  • Norsvin and Topigs Norsvin Invest more than 220 million NOK annually in research and development. 
  • Every year 11 million insemination doses are produced, resulting in 118 million finishers with Topigs Norsvin genetics. This makes Topigs Norsvin one of the larges swine genetics companies in the world.

We are Norsvin

Our owners, 1300 Norwegian pig producers, have a say when it comes to important priorities in our breeding program. Norsvin’s owners are organized in chapters located across the country. Everyone benefits from the progress enabled by our breeding program. 

Norsvin was founded in 1958, on three main pillars: 
  • The farmer’s right of self-determination  
  • The achievements of science
  • Progress for the many 

These pillars are just as important today: Norsvin aims to base the breeding program on science and modern breeding methods. 

For more than 60 years, we have bred for efficiency and quality every step of the way. This has given us genetics with unique traits, and made the Norwegian pig well sought after internationally.

Norsvin Landsvin and Norsvin Duroc is made available on the global market through Topigs Norsvin; one of the world’s largest swine genetics companies. The international business largely contributes to the financing of Norsvin’s R&D department in Norway.

There are approximately 2500 production units with pigs in Norway, which every year produces 133 000 tonns of pork. This makes the pig industry the largest meat industry in the country. We are proud of our contribution to the Norwegian food production!

Industrial policy involvement

Norsvin works with the Norwegian Farmers’ Association (Norges Bondelag) and the Norwegian Farmers’ and Small Farmers’ Association (Norsk bonde- og småbrukarlag) and political circles in order to improve the pig industry’s framework conditions. The pig farmer’s voice is heard locally via Norsvin’s many local chapters, which strive to make the pig industry visible as an important player in Norwegian business life.

Purpose

Norsvin’s purpose is to help secure the finances of Norwegian pig producers by offering high-quality genetic material. Norsvin’s international venture therefore aims to contribute to the funding of research and development and at the same time to reduce the costs associated with the semen production.

Norsvin’s owners, who are pig producers – around 1,300 today – should be involved in decisions related to the breeding priorities. The owners are organized in chapters on a county level, which in turn can be organized into local sub chapters. Each pig producer should be able to take part in the progress achieved by the breeding efforts.

Norsvin locations:

Norsvin has about 90 employees, most of which are located at our HQ in Hamar. We also have employees in other locations; at the boar test station Norsvin Delta, the AI station Norsvin Alfa, and the boar quarantine Norsvin Omega outside Hamar.

Several of our scientists are located at NMBU in Ås . We also have breeding consultants who travel out to the nuclear herds across the country. 

Norsvin’s HQ is in Hamar, where we are located together with the companies Geno and Tyr.

Avl for redusert rånesmak

Androstenon og skatol er begge arvelige komponenter, så avl for lavere nivåer av rånesmak i grisene er mulig og er en langsiktig løsning på rånesmaksproblematikken. Rånesmak er nå implementert i avlsmålet til norsk landsvin og duroc.

Grunnene til at dette ikke har blitt gjort tidligere, er usikkerhet rundt hvordan en seleksjon vil påvirke reproduksjonsegenskaper samt mangel på tilfredsstillende målemetoder.

Androstenon

Androstenon er et feromon som produseres i testikkel i samme biokjemiske reaksjonsvei som testosteron og østrogen. Androstenon fraktes med blod til spyttkjertlene der det fungerer som et duftstoff som bidrar til å aktivere stårefleksen hos purka. Det er dog et fettløselig steroid og for høy produksjon og/eller for dårlig nedbryting fører til at androstenon lagres i fettvev. For høye nivåer i fett gir rånesmak. Nivå av androstenon er sterkt påvirket av genetiske faktorer. 

Skatol

Skatol er et metabolsk produkt av aminosyren tryptofan som absorberes fra tarm og brytes ned i lever. Nivå av skatol er også påvirket av genetikk, men kan til en viss grad reguleres av miljømessige faktorer. Skatol er ett betydelig større problem hos råner enn hos purker fordi androstenon hemmer nedbryting av skatol slik at det lagres i fettvev.  

Innsamling av data

I prosjektet BoarPPM ble det tatt prøver av nedskjærte halvsøsken til avlsrånene, og androstenon og skatol på disse ble analysert ved hormonlaboratoriet på NMBU Adamstuen. Dette gir sikre målinger på rånesmak som kan brukes i beregning av arvegrader og korrelasjoner til andre egenskaper. 

Videre har det vært ett annet prosjekt, finansiert av Innovasjon Norge, der vi testet den sensoriske (lukt-test) metoden «Human Nose Score». Denne er betydelig mindre nøyaktig enn kjemiske analyser og er heller ikke objektiv, men den er billig og kjapp og har gitt verdifulle fenotyper til bruk i avlsarbeidet. 

Resultater

Både egne analyser og andre publiserte studier konkluderer med at det ikke er noen store negative genetiske korrelasjoner til andre egenskaper ved seleksjon for lavere rånesmak. Med fenotypene innsamlet i prosjektene som grunnlag, har rånesmak derfor blitt implementert i avlsmålene for landsvin og duroc. For øyeblikket tas det kjemiske målinger på et utvalg av slektninger til avlsrånene for å sikre oppdaterte fenotyper. Selv uten direkte registreringer på avlsrånene så forventer vi en reduksjon i nivået av rånesmak framover ved hjelp av genetisk seleksjon. 

Suksess i Nederland

I Nederland har Topigs Norsvin hatt stor suksess med avl for lavere rånesmak og har iløpet av de siste ti årene klart å redusere nivå av rånesmak med over 50 prosent i sine raser. 

Noe av årsaken til denne suksessen ligger i at de har brukt fettbiopsier fra avlsrånene for å sikre målinger til effektiv avl. Dette har imidlertid så langt ikke vært tillatt i Norge.
